Research in area of mobile networks exploiting drones received Best Paper Award at European Wireless 2017

The paper "Performance of Mobile Networks with UAVs: Can Flying Base Stations Substitute Ultra-Dense Small Cells?", resulting from cooperation of the 5Gmobile research lab at the Department of telecommunication engineering at FEE, CTU and the Communication Systems Department at EURECOM, received Best Paper Award at European Wireless 2017 in Dresden.

The paper outlines a novel architecture for a real-time and dynamic control of drones, which act as flying base stations in mobile networks. Furthermore, the paper analyses gains in a channel quality, a throughput, and an energy consumption of mobile phones for the proposed concept. The results show high performance of the flying base stations and confirms suitability of the flying base stations as a very efficient alternative to an ultra-dense deployment of small cells in the future mobile networks.
