  • Presentation "Computer vision using machine learning: challenges and solutions" - 9/6/2022 2:00 PM in laboratory B3-703
    3. 6. 2022
    Speaker: Prof. Heikki Kälviäinen
Prof. Heikki Kälviäinen heads the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory at the Department of Computer Engineering at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology in Finland. His research focuses on computer and machine vision problems, pattern recognition and machine learning. Prof. Kälviäinen prepared a very interesting lecture combining a number of research areas in artificial intelligence. In the first part, mainly aimed at those interested in learning about AI principles, he will introduce basic approaches to digital image processing and machine learning analysis. The second part is devoted to selected sample applications of machine vision: automated recognition of Saimaa seal individuals, assessment of Baltic Sea plankton, and prediction of future board quality based on observations of the outer surface of logs.

Title: Computer vision using machine learning: challenges and solutions
    Abstract:
The presentation considers computer vision, especially a point of view of machine learning applications. Digital image processing and analysis with machine learning methods enable efficient solutions for various areas of useful data-centric engineering applications. Challenges with image acquisition, data annotation with expert knowledge, and clustering and classification, including deep learning method training are discussed. Different applications are given as examples based on the fresh novel data available: planktons in the Baltic Sea, Saimaa ringed seals in Lake Saimaa, and logs in the sawmill industry. In the first application the motivation is that distributions of plankton types give much information about the condition of the sea water system, e.g., about the climate change. An imaging flow cytometer can produce a lot of plankton images which should be classified into different plankton types. Manual classification of these images is very laborious, and thus, a CNN-based method has been developed to automatically recognize the plankton types in the Baltic Sea. In the second application the Saimaa ringed seals are automatically identified individually using camera trap images for assisting this very small population to survive in nature. CNN-based re-identification methods are based on pelage patterns of the seals. The third application is related to the sawmill industry. The digitalization of the sawmill industry is important for optimizing material flows and the quality. The research is focused on seeing inside the log to be able to predict which kinds of sawn boards are produced after cutting the log.

  • Research in area of mobile networks exploiting drones received Best Paper Award at European Wireless 2017
    19. 5. 2017
The paper "Performance of Mobile Networks with UAVs: Can Flying Base Stations Substitute Ultra-Dense Small Cells?", resulting from cooperation of the 5Gmobile research lab at the Department of telecommunication engineering at FEE, CTU and the Communication Systems Department at EURECOM, received Best Paper Award at European Wireless 2017 in Dresden.

The paper outlines a novel architecture for a real-time and dynamic control of drones, which act as flying base stations in mobile networks. Furthermore, the paper analyses gains in a channel quality, a throughput, and an energy consumption of mobile phones for the proposed concept. The results show high performance of the flying base stations and confirms suitability of the flying base stations as a very efficient alternative to an ultra-dense deployment of small cells in the future mobile networks.

  • 2. 3. 2017 - Lecture: Heikki Kälviäinen - The automatic image-based identification of Saimaa ringed seals
    16. 1. 2017
    Abstract:
Automatic individual identification of Saimaa ringed seals

In order to monitor animal population and to track individual animals in a non-invasive way, identification of individual animals based on certain distinctive characteristics is necessary. In this presentation, automatic image-based individual identification of the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal (Phoca hispida saimensis) is considered. The ringed seals have a distinctive permanent pelage pattern that is unique to each individual. This can be used as a basis for the identification process. A framework is proposed that starts with the segmentation of the seal from the background and proceeds to various post-processing steps to make the pelage pattern more visible and the identification easier. For experiments, the novel dataset of the Saimaa ringed seal images has been collected and annotated. The framework is compared using two existing species independent individual identification methods and the dataset. The results show that the segmentation and proposed post-processing steps increase the identification performance.

  • FOXCONN Taiwan is funding our research in area of cloud radio access network (C-RAN)
    7. 12. 2016
FOXCONN, Taiwan and 5Gmobile research laboratory (http://5Gmobile.fel.cvut.cz), department of Telecommunication Engineering, CTU in Prague work together on development of solutions for splitting of MAC functions between virtualized control function in radio access network (base-band unit) and remote radio heads. The delivered algorithm should enable dynamic communication control with all benefits commonly expected from cloud controlled-RAN (C-RAN) in future mobile networks, i.e., low cost of RAN, low delay and high capacity. The project targets both to design theoretical solutions for functional splitting and its testing and validation in a mobile network.
